I feel inspired by mermaids because to me Mermaids represent FREEDOM. They are independent, adventurous spirits with a deep connection to all aspects of the natural world. I believe mermaids speak to those of us who share these qualities. Feminine and Strong describes this Mermaid. She isn’t just sitting around on a rock combing her hair waiting for a sailor to play with. She is resourceful, independent and in charge of her own destiny. Have confidence and know your own strength.

“Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, ‘Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous?’ Actually, who are you not to be?” – Marianne Williamson.

“ I must be a Mermaid. I have no fear of depths and a great fear of shallow living”. – Anais Nin

Lemurian Love

I was inspired to create a painting that would attempt to express the transcendent love that can exist in true partnership. The vision came to me as “Mer” not human. I believe this is meant to enhance the feeling of this mysterious bond and very rare level of love.

Some believe Lemuria was an ancient civilization which existed prior to and during the time of Atlantis. Physically, it is believed that Lemuria existed largely in the Southern Pacific, between North America and Asia/Australia. Lemuria is also sometimes referred to as Mu. The Lemurian people were believed to be both highly evolved and very spiritual. Some also believe the islands of Hawaii to be connected to Lemuria.

There is more to us than meets the eye. If you adjust your eyes and heart you can often see colors around people or energy flowing from them. All of my life I have envisioned wings on people…kind of like reading aura’s I suppose. I do believe we can see glimpses into other dimensions. Lavender Visions explores that glimpse into the ethereal realm.

I have a deep respect, fear and fascination with sharks. Living on Maui shark energy is strong and I felt the need to explore the beauty and power of these great hunters and keepers of our ocean ecosystem. In this painting a mermaid is hunting with a Black Tip Reef shark and an Oceanic White Tip shark. She is part Tiger shark. Mermaids represent freedom in my paintings and sharks bring powerful medicine to our oceans. Combining the two allowed me to celebrate the essence of a skilled hunter, and the empowered strength of shark as guardian spirit.

The shark in Hawai’i is more than just a ferocious ocean predator or ominous threat to surfers and swimmers. Here, the shark, or mano, is woven in the fabric of Native Hawaiian culture and history.

Some early Hawaiians worshiped, cared for and protected sharks as ‘aumakua, or family gods, while many others viewed sharks an important source of food and tools.

A mano kanaka was a shark thought to be born of a human mother and sired by a shark god, or by a deified person whose spirit possesses a shark or turns into a shark, according to Pukui.

From all the animal deities, the shark is the greatest ‘aumakua.”

My fairies tend to be an attempt to express that mysterious, deep, sensual, powerful place that lives in each of us but only we know exists. They only show up when it’s safe to reveal themselves. This Fairy is having a sensual experience with the world around her. She is drinking in the smell and color of the delicate blossom kissed by the sunshine while her body is also kissed by the light. This serene oasis she has found allows her to be at complete ease with her self, allowing her to be naked, exposed and opened to a level where her wings even become visible. I am suggesting that there is a place within us that holds such a beauty and when we find that peace within we can be opened to our own winged hearts.

Golden

I enjoy creating mermaids that feel real. I ask myself how they would be different depending on where they live and I enjoy placing my mermaids into real settings. “Golden” is a West Maui mermaid. She likes to bask in the warmth of the sunset on that side of the island after a day of playing with surfers. You can see Lanai in the upper left corner.
